The work of Green Revolution Norman Borlaug was to introduce dwarfing genes into improved varieties and produce these in monocultures without crop rotation or organic amendments. The dwarfed varieties could exploit higher fertilizer and produce larger yields without lodging, i.e. falling under the grain yield. The dwarf varieties are more susceptible to weeds disease and insects and lead to more application of fertilizers and herbicides. The dwarfed varieties also lead to dwarfed root systems. These systems are based on monocultures which can have issues of soil acidification, loss of soil organic matter and reduced soil biological activity. From a dietary standpoint animals and people cannot live on rice alone. While short-term use of HYV system looks favorable just on a yield basis the energy, environment and economic effects are not all positive. Many intensive monocultural systems tend to break down so the short term comparison may not be reflective and accurate of long-term results. In terms of these systems, they require higher inputs which are sources of issues related to them. If the ammoniated fertilizer and pesticide contaminate the water system it could be difficult to assess it from a risk and gain basis.  It should be considered that rotations and organic amendment can improve the base soil and offer an alternative to monocultures. Some of the advantages are lower energy input, less detrimental environmental and health issues and favorable economics. The industrialized agricultural model has not been very kind in terms of environment and energy issues. 

I personally think that nutrient mining is not the problem of high yielding cultivars.

Green revolution made developing countries like India food secured country.

But problem is that without appropriated soil, nutrient, water management practices: Yes HYV and continues intensive cultivation can deplete soil nutrients.

But we need to go for crop residue recycling. Unless, crop residue recycling nutrient mining is the serious problem.

With due respect a researcher like u are asking me about the adverse effects of hyv seeds but the hyv seeds from the introduction till today has been a hindrance to Indian agriculture from different  perspectives . Hyv seeds have the most certain negative events in the most wildest sides of Haryana and Punjab. And the increased in unemployment. This has led to concerns about the susceptibility of a food supply to pathogens that cannot be controlled by agrochemicals, as well as the permanent loss of many valuable genetic traits bred into traditional varieties over thousands of years.

sir, sorry to disrespect u but i am bound to research about the demerits of HYV seeds as i have faced the negative impact of it in our crop production in our village , and this sowing of HYV seeds has mostly to 90% made our crop go mad and ruin our years agriculture . HYV seeds have been base of agriculture from 1960s but in todays period they have most negative effects in crop production . upto this i have completed my thesis but cant complete it without the adverse effects for which i face daily problems ... thank u sir

Using Higher yielding varieties requires a greater level of management matching the variety to the soil and growing conditions. Just planting a HYV and adding fertilizer year after year hardly works anywhere. You only need to add the fertilizer you carry out. Adding the Nitrogen in 2 applications solves many of the problems with pollution.  Putting down Phosphorus right beside the seed at planting time does the same for Phosphorus.

Rotating among and winter, summer and legume crop over a period of 10 to 15 years takes care of most long term weed and insect problems.

Getting higher yields from most of our land is necessary unless we are willing to condemn a part of the world to death by starvation.

There is not, nor will there ever be, a perfect crop production system.  The Green Revolution and high yield varieties saved India from massive famine in the 1960s.  Did it reduce genetic diversity and require high nutrient inputs? Yes. Is it possible some of those inputs have left the land to which they were applied and moved to another location where they are considered pollutants? Yes.  Did the shorter statured varieties result in less total biomass to return to the soil as organic matter?  Most likely.  Did the increase in production per unit of land generally improve profitability to the producer while simultaneously reducing food shortages in certain regions of the world?  In most cases, certainly.  Now, can the entire world return to small, "organic" farms, requiring the use of higher labor inputs, widespread use of relatively expensive (from a cost per pound of nutrient standpoint) animal manures and other organic nutrient sources (which have their own pollution issues), pest management issues that require a significantly more sophisticated level of knowledge, and a consumer that is willing to pay more for the product?  I don't think so.  Is it possible there is a place for a wide variety of management practices?  I'm nearly sure of it.  Additionally, more high input/high output managers are turning (returning?) to cover crops and other methods to enhance soil organic matter and reduce soil degradation.  More consumers than ever, particularly those with greater expendable income levels, are demanding more "locally grown" produce grown under more "sustainable" (whatever that means) practices.  Bottom line, there are pros and cons, risks and benefits, good and not so good points about any crop or livestock production systems.  None of it is "natural," unless you consider human manipulation of his surroundings to also be natural.  Our turning of the soil, desire to control competing plant and pest species, fencing of the land to control livestock movement, etc., are all disruptive, in some sense, to Nature.  But I think I will just go ahead and consider myself as a being of nature and attempt to feed myself and my family and friends to the best of my abilities.  I just thank God I have a source of income from other than my small, "sustainable" farm, or I would be broke.  Maybe happy, but broke.

Perhaps reintroducing landrace varieties of rice to slowly replace HYV cultivar could restore the lost diversity in the cultivation of this crop and this process could contribute to sustainability. Consider also the work done at The Land Institute in Salina Kansas to perennialize rice without any biotechnological manipulation.
