Of course people have life worse than I do. And if I cannot help myself then I definitely can't help the less privileged. I am in a difficult situation. My family thinks I have given up on life despite my large body of research. I am too mentally ill to take regular classes but I need somehow to prove to my family that I am doing such valuable research. To anyone that can help, I need you.

I'm a dad as well as a researcher, and my first care for my children is that they are taking good care of themselves, that they are well and happy. You have nothing to prove to your family because we love our families no matter what they do or do not do.
Of course, if my children do something horrible (I'm thinking of the state of the bathroom for instance) then I tell them that I love them as much as ever but I like them a little less at this very moment.
If you are not well, the greatest gift you can give to your family is to take good care of yourself. There will be plenty of time for research, believe me!

I am a Christian and a researcher working on my Ph. D. I have had severe mental health problems for years. This runs in my family, as well as ADHD. My mother taught me long ago that when we serve others, we do ourselves the most good because focusing on our problems only increases anxiety and depression.
Psalm 143:11-12 For your name sake Oh Lord, preserve my Life; in your righteousness bring me out of trouble. In your unfailing love, silence my enemies; destroy my foes, for I am your servant.
This can become a source of strength.
As an complementary view to Dawn McCrea , you might consider the flight safety rule : take care of your own oxygen mask before attending to others. I agree with her wholeheartedly that care and compassion for others does not just invest life with meaning, it is also a sustainable source of energy. But only if this caring and compassion is also directed at yourself. I have seen too many people who were burned out by endlessly working selflessly for others while their own health suffered.
So care for yourself as the dearest person on earth, and receive care from those who care about you with gratitude. And when your own oxygen mask is flowing freely, you can look around to see if everyone else is okay.
And I would certainly agree with her – and the research backs us up – that spiritual practice is good for your health and wellbeing. It is not for nothing that at evensong the prayer is for "that peace which the world cannot give".
I am a mature student and received a bipolar diagnosis when I was 40. I am 52 years old now and finally mentally resilient enough to retrain to work with teenagers, to help them cope with their mental health. My family have never understood me, due to how bi polar affected me when I was younger. They are family and I love them but there have been times when they have been very toxic. In those times I was able to surround myself with those in my family who were prepared to listen with no judgement, but also friends and kindred spirits.
By reaching out with this research you are demonstrating that you are not giving up and by trying to help others you have a sense of purpose. Keep going and doing all that you feel able to do, just don't let the illness define who you are or who others perceive you to be!
Life is always giving situations, but when you see negative aura in other people about you then take as a chance to shine to them and don't give up on whatever you are doing to help... Turn that negativity into a positive power within you... Don't be offended just remember someone has something to say but wat matters is wat you say about yourself... Be positive ..
