By definition Voltage ripple is a fluctuation of the voltage waveform caused by the existence of high order harmonic components. After doing some research I found some different ways to calculate the ripple voltage. One is by finding the sqrt(sum(Vhigher_order_harmonics^2)). The other way, that I found at Mohans "Power electronic devices" is to find the integral of 1/C*icdt where C is the capacitance of the smoothing capacitor.

Which way according to your opinion is the most scientifically valid?
