For better creep resistance of the material, the single crystal is recommended, like single crystal nickel superalloy for turbine blades. But, why the grain size less than 10 micrometres is recommended for Superplastic deformation to occur?
Superplasticity is largely controlled by grain boundary sliding (GBS). For GBS to occur, the area covered by grain boundaries needs to be as high as possible. Thus, with fine grains, the total grain boundary area is high and GBS is easily activated.
