Tatia, I found this paper interesting. The CRU at the UEA has revised the data series used by Belda to remove the wet bas in the data set used for the paper.

That should read "wet bias". The amount of precipitation was overestimated and has now been reduced. Between the two 30-year periods from 1901-1930 to 1975-2005 fewer cells worldwide would have changed from desert to steppe and from steppe to humid.

Even before the adjustment for wet bias, Belda et al showed that the change in climate worldwide during in 75 years had an unimpressive impact upon the distribution of global regional climates as defined by the Koppen-Trewartha system. The world climate map is still more or less the same as those drawn by Koppen and Trewartha.

As I recall from my studies in Canada around 1955, the lines defining the number of days of growing season had already shifted a few hundred a kilometers north from when my grandfather was still a student. Recent research show little change has occurred since then.

A study by McKenney et al showed that "...Tree climate envelopes shifted northward by 57 km on average (with a standard deviation of 42.5 km)..."

If the distribution is normal, two-thirds of climate zones shifted between about 15 km to 100 km. This is too uncertain to be useful mainly because the longitudinal differences disguise the processes at work.

The latitude of the hardiness zones for western tree species appear to be influenced as much by changes in rainfall as temperature via the combined impact on evapotranspiration. Northward shift in the hardiness zones in the west was about double that in the east, 75 kilometers compared to 38 kilometers.

The study by McKenney et al shows one week earlier leaf emergence in sugar maple during the 60 years from 1950 to 2010. (Sugar maple is confined to southeastern Canada and northeastern USA.)

Crop and ornamental studies may not be so reliable as climate indicators as are trees because intensive plant breeding has altered the hardiness of commercial species.

If any of this is useful to anyone, I can elaborate on a similar study in Russia.
