1. Is there a way of modeling an EM field or wave, instead of modeling an antenna to generate it?
2. Is there a way of modeling only a receiving antenna to receive that wave?
From the tutorials I have been following, all the waves are generated with antennas or a radiating device, but for my purpose, I know the characteristics of the wave I want, so I don't need an antenna to generate that. Also, only transmitting antennas are modeled. I am aware that by reciprocity, both transmit and receive antennas are the same, but I want to model a receiver antenna and study how it works with that particular wave.
If anyone can guide me, or direct me to materials I can read, I would be very glad. You can also suggest a tool that can do it better, if you think HFSS cannot do it.

The best available EM simulator I think now is CST MWS due to its performances and environment building structures. It offers many methods to generate excitation signal such as discrete port, waveguide port and plane wave; the latest one can be used as a generated wave specially when modelling a receiving antenna. In addition it offers source field excitation which is very useful.
For CST you can model either a transmitting or receiving antenna; for radiation pattern it is the same for Tx or Rx antenna thanks to reciprocity theory, but if you want to measure the voltage at the receiving antenna you place distributed element (like R) and you measure the incoming voltage at this point as example, I can give you more advice if you send me your model to help you.
You could try CST MWS software. Many published articles and tutorials are available for CST MWS. Now, you can even installed the CST in Window 8 OS. Please give a try.
