Unlikely. The two represent different tool kits to achieve different but overlapping aims. Far more likely that 'conventional' farming becomes less exploitative of natural resource base through applications of precision farming tools, technology innovations, knowledge intensity, etc. That way efficiency, returns on investment and output will not suffer unduly, but the environmental footprint can be reduced.

I believe it could be possible to increase both yield and quality of produce through organic farming by fulfilling the timely application of required fertilizers and disease control measures. However, sometimes it takes a long period to get a satisfactory yield.

Principally, it is possible. However, all organic farming means, you need to avoid agricultural inputs produced from industries. Production of organic inputs can take lengthy time and it can be a challenge to replace all inputs required in the production. So, practically, may be difficult to completely replace by organic farming.

Scientifically it should be...but there are many more constraints owing to least adoption of organic farming in India...lack of risk bearing ability on farmers level, socioeconomic constraints, risk of getting lower yield, problem for weed Management, pest management... government support is one of the most important priority for selling their organic food produce with remunerative returns especially rational price for their selling produce... efficient extension activities at farmer level, exhibition of success stories for adoption of organic farming, subsidy on organic fertilizers and other amendement can be strategy for the same

Organic farming effects are though very slow but everlasting positive and sustainable results so as to maintain an equilibrium between biotic and abiotic environment especially edaphic environment by manipulating all Physical chemical and biological properties of the soil...Time duration between application of organic manures in the soil and recieving so many benefits related with soil and crop is very long...Farmers obvious need quick response, that's why due to longer time with lack of risk bearing ability, still very slower rate of adoption of organic farming..It can be understood by example suppose anyone is suffering from headache, and he/she need quick treatment to get rid of it, for this will take allopathic medicine only..if we say, take Desi medicine/Ayurvedic medicine, perhaps he/she will deny as he/she is interested to get quick response..She can't wait for so long by depending on the Ayurvedic dawa which no doubt cure the ailments perfectly but very at a very slow rare with lesser or even negligible side effects....The same is happening...

I totally agree with you. Govt. support is very necessary to promote organic farming. Like Govt have to launch MSP for organics product having price more than normal MSP. Then may be farmer got motivation to do organic farming. Same time, Kvks should participate in this process and show demonstration to the farmers

Considering population increase, this will be difficult. There are other constraints - technology, bulkiness, etc.

In Andhra Pradesh a Mr. T.V. Kumar is promoting Zero Budget Natural Farming. They are getting yields of 20 to 200% higher than farming with chemicals. So for sure organic agriculture will feed more people. Also because it is cheaper to grow food the organic way more people can afford to grow their own food. The high costs of inputs in the chemical farming system means that less farmers are able to produce. Also organic food is healthier and better for the environment.

Remember that organic fertilizer release nutrient slowly and it's Buckyness. Organic alone may not be attainable nor sustainable. Any soil with low organic matter will need more of organic fertizer to be supplemented with inorganic. So I believe a combination of both would be right. The ratio of combination depends on the fertility status of the soil in question.

In my opinio, the organic farming, in current situation, is not widespread to replacing the inorganic one. Considering the population growth, supplying the nutrients for growing crops and enriching soil or water in hydroponic fields are the crucial challenges. Maybe one solution is developing the composting technologies.

Adoption of any farming system is loosely demand driven, and is directly affected by seeming benefit-cost ratio. As low productivity is inherently associated with organic farming, the cost of organic product will always be higher. Therefore, to my opinion, it may be practiced in areas where the consumers are health "conscious" and have high purchasing capacity. As organic farming has been shown to have yield advantage (8-15%) under drought and other abiotic stresses, its adoption looks promising in such areas.

I suggest the use of the term "Sustainable Farming" for combined use of organic and inorganic farming. In such a system, a significant proportion of inorganic inputs may be replaced by organic inputs, such as biopesticides, bioherbicides, biofertilizers, organic manures, green manuring, and so on.

We cant replace our existing farming situation with Completely organic. But we can use our resources in a sustainable manner to meet the food & nutrition demands of the future population. Now our focus should not be only on Quantity we have to think beyond and make a proper combination with nutrition-sensitive sustainable agricultural production.

This is an interesting and pertinent question. Many of us aspire to go organic for its ecological and sustainable attributes, besides health benefits. However, productivity in organic farming has been reported to be lower than that in the conventional one - this raises questions about being able to feed the ever increasing population. And organic foods are somewhat more expensive than the conventionally produced foods - this will affect the vulnerable section of our global society. So we need to consider which path to choose, either let some people die of hunger or live with negatives of the conventional farming. Therefore, it does not look like organic would fully replace, but can certainly grow.
