I think that the best drone for your purposes is the DJI Phantom, maybe the 3rd or the 4th version. Probably it has the best balance between good quality of images, good drone stabilization during flights, acceptable breaking strength, small and cheap quantity of pieces (this decrease the repair cost if a student crashes the drone), among others. Also, considering that is not a professional model, is not so expensive. Good luck!

I would say that depends on the type of output you want to obtain. From my point of view, if you want to do photogrammetry and/or acquiring orthophotos the best option is the DJI Mavic Pro, or even the Mavic Pro 2. The advantages of this drone are that it is highly portable, lightweight, fast, stable when flying and reliable.

It still depends on the planned research purpose to be carried out.

Different drones technologies are designed with varying capabilities for 'research', which as well determines the cost.

You would certainly have a more definite answer when you specify the research activity and the kind of data to be collected.
