Biotechnology is broader than many of the debates or discussions that occupy the internet. For example, using genomics to accelerate genetic progress in classical plant and animal breeding depends on techniques that were developed in biotechnology. We now know that Agrobacterium tumefaciens (now known as Rhizobium radiobacter), the bacteria that is used by scientists for gene transfer in plants was active in nature doing the same about millions of years ago (see link). It created GMO plants then and now is used by scientists to do the same thing. Mankind has always doubted the discoveries made by scientists. It took more than 200 years for church leaders and government officials to accept the concept that the earth rotates around the sun, not the opposite. Generally, our societies are scientifically illiterate, so their beliefs are based on superstition and tradition. It always takes decades or centuries for the general populace to accept significant breakthroughs in science. Many still believe the world is flat.
