Superplasticizers are basically performance enhancing admixtures. They reduce water demand and increases cohesion or in other words workability leading to good placement and compaction of concrete. Though their real benefit is reduction in w/c ratio but if that is constant then also they will improve strength because of the ease of compaction.
The advantages of using uperplasticizer is that you can reduce the water/cement ratio while maintaining a high workability. So your concrete will improve the compressive strength and workability.
the main purpose of adding SP is to improve the workability of concrete.. but there's a limitation of the SP mount added to the concrete mixture, otherwise that may effect in the mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, tensile and flexure..
the range of SP amount used is almost 2-4 % kg/m3 of concrete.
Use of super-plasticizer is predominant specially for high strength concrete. It is basically follow the rule that low W/C ratio gives good strength with proper compaction. To achieve good compaction W/C ratio should high, but on other hand with high W/C ratio leads to less strength. So in this situation SP plays a vital role to overcome this basic philosophy of concrete technology.
in my opinion, superplasticizer is added into concrete to increase the workability of concrete with low water cement ratio. You can refer to textbook Properties of concrete By A.M. Neville.
