There is increasing attention on the need to harness the power of finance in order to achieve sustainability. Specifically what is being suggested, is that asset managers divest from fossil fuels and invest in renewables. Integrated Assessment Models seem to suggest that such a structural change towards a post-fossil fuel economy will allow prosperity and staying within the 1.5c.

Is there however any evidence about the physical possibility of having an industrial global economy for 9 billion people without fossil fuels? Is there any evidence of the production/distribution of renewable, at any scale, entirely without fossil fuels? If so, can it be scaled up? Or when talking about an economy based on renewables, what sort of economy would this be?
