Can we convert old IC engines with high pollution to compressed air engines. Changes required only for intake system and cam shaft.
Only expansion and exhaust will be there. I believe this is feasible. Let me know your opinion.
Compressed air engines are negative emission type. Since they use air and at the time of compressing air is filtered hence eventually it remove dust and other things. This is also an alternative for battery where mechanical shaft power from power plants can be directly used for compressing air. Hence electricity conversion and transmission losses wont be there.
Note. These wont be negative emission if we are burning coal for power production.

No. The energy stored in any compressed gas at any realistic pressure (say < 500 bar) is far tool low to give reasonable range for a commercial vehicle. Plus the efficiency of storage is only about 60% and the efficiency of the engine is even worse. Except for special purpose machinery e.g. zero spark/ fire risk zones, compressed air is not a useful medium.
Apart from Tony Maine's point what energy source do you propose to compress the air? If it is fossil fuel based you are back to square 1 (plus efficiency losses as for charging electric vehicles from fossil fuelled power stations).
Tony Maine it can be used as supercharge to increase the specific power .
Lex Fullarton , I don't think it would be an autonomous car but it can decrease the energy consumption ,for example the source could be the brake or the turbo-compressor at the exhaust of the engine.
If you are trying to recover otherwise wasted energy in braking etc you will be much better off using electrical energy than compressed air, it's more efficient and actually easier to control. All hybrid vehicles use this technique. And I don't see how using compressed air can increase specific power without over-rating the stress levels of the pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft. It isn't very feasible.
