The BRI is becoming more global with the last week meeting about the initiative. How do you see the future of the BRI and what will be its impact on global trade?
The “belt and road initiative” has achieved a series of remarkable results and shows broad prospects for cooperation. In April 2019, China hold the second "belt and road initiative" international cooperation summit forum. The summit will surely condense more powerful cooperation momentum and promote the construction of "belt and road initiative" towards higher quality, higher standards, and higher levels. They are moving in the direction of paving the way for a better future.
From blindly celebratory to apocalyptical fear - the span of reactions towards BRI is broad but rarely based in facts
- there is no one holistic masterplan, every infrastructure project along certain lines is being put under this lofty name as it guarantees government support in China and other regions
- development in the global south will pick up through this initiative
- BRI underlines a global powershift which results in the typical accompanying struggles, the thing to fear is that a new political model as unlike the liberal democratic one as possible is going to use it's new position to undermine agreements that have been made among the former global leading states and others
- the implementation of social and ecological as well as human rights standards is the biggest problem, as China stated to follow a "non involvement" policy, investments are going into projects and hands which should never happen
It is neither good nor bad, however most involved are tremendously underprepared to deal with the Chinese stakeholders and the consequences of joining.
As a sinologist I have been active in creating a balanced China picture in Germany. Therefore I am not a fan of the one sided media portrayal. But as a member of civil society and somebody who works with members of civil society in China nearly daily I know what it feels like to try and promote positive change under an authoritarian one party regime led by this New government, and it’s not pretty. Countries under a more liberal democratic system are not utopian however people do not live in perpetual fear in them. we do have very different perspectives as we work in completely different areas.
That's a very interesting discussion. China's BRI initiative is going to redesign the glocal supply chain network. It won't be wrong to say that it is Silk Road 2.0 but the fact cannot be denied that China's is not in this only for trade routes and economic progress. Think tanks or researchers are naturally inclined to be skpetical of China's motives due to lack of transparency which makes them believe that it is not just financial investment, it is 'strategic investment.'
Not only China’s geopolitical power goals should be looked at, as they differ very little from America’s or other Western powers. for me it’s the step back that we are doing if we allow Chinese labor rights, environmental, land rights, human rights ...standards to move along the new Silk Road harming people In Asia, Eurasi, Easter Europe ...
As this thread is supposed to be about china‘s Bri and the expected and already seen effects Hassan Syed there‘s not much to reply to your historic detour :) but thank you anyway
One road, known as the Belt and Road Initiative, is a Chinese initiative built on the ruins of the Silk Road in the 19th century to connect China with the world, to be the largest infrastructure project in human history.
thank you so much Mr Hassan for your sharing the book of"China and the Islamic World:How the New Silk Road is Transforming Global Politics" by Dr.Robert R. Bianchi, Oxford University Press.i do really appreciate it .
It is great initiative and China did a lot to foster its global trade. Meantime the United Stated try to stop the development of BRI. Everything depends who will be more efficient - President D.Trump or Pressident X. Jingping. The decoupling process is ongoing, what is a great obstacle for the initiative. And COVID-19 for sure will exert its impact on the global production and trade. It meand that it is difficult to predict the impact of BRI. As I have written, China is very motivated, but more important are the reactions of many countries... And one more thing - the world expect good products. I agree that China already has the new technology in some industries. But if their companies are selling COVID-19 face masks without certification and which are not following the international safety norms, as I know from the TV that they did, the amazing BRI investments might be useless. I can imagine that some countries already realized that they should diversify their suppliers and more closely check the quality of the purchased goods...
