Very good question! We recently began an initiative for early career faculty to increase their publication record for those on tenure track. Academic writing is a foundational skill for higher education but even more so for faculty wanting to get published, but unfortunately, it is not given enough attention in graduate school. Thus, more development is needed when new PhDs take up their faculty positions. My recent work on research e-clinics can give some insight into this need.

Academic publishing is a critical challenge at our university at multiple levels. I would say that the challenges are both structural (available time, focused research programs, financial resources, capacity, incentives) and cultural (mindset, drive to pursue higher academic performances, traditions of publishing). The bottlenecks differ by institution. But so is the output. There are efforts to improve the academic records by for instance providing PhD scholarships, and technical support of editorial board of journals during article writing.

There are several challenges associated with academic publishing. It is usually very difficult to write satisfactorily in English for an international audience. It really takes a lot of time and effort for a non-English speaker to master the art of journal article writing. There can be misunderstandings resulting from an author and reviewer coming from a different culture and a different context.

Another important issue is the problem of funding. Conducting research is an expensive enterprise and funding is not readily available. Funding research with my salary is usually very difficult.

However, it is important to note that there is light at the end of the tunnel: that these difficulties are not insurmountable. In the academic publication enterprise, that perseverance and hard work are the keys to successful academic publishing.

4- A cohesive institutional strategic focus for research

5- Arabic specialized journals

9- Scholars encouragement.

10- Communications among Arabic institutions
