I would recommend to look at studies conducted on process of expanding the EU, parallel with BREXIT and current EU dynamics economic and social. Comparing the US history compare to EU may be also relevant, due to the fact that there so many Europeans who are today US citizens and yet are still treasure their ties old Europe.
