I want to make a solution of HCl and H2SO4, however mixing the two will create a lot of HCl gas and is quite dangerous. Is there a way to make this solution safely? Can I somehow mix HCl with a sulfate salt to get an acidic solution with all the ions present?
The strength of reaction and the extent of oxidation will depend on concentration of H2SO4 , better the concentration, higher will be the oxidation, and more oxy-acids of Chlorine will be formed in larger concentrations.
If they are dilute, yes. Otherwise, you will want to add cold H2SO4 very slowly to cold HCl, in a fume hood. Or you can mix HCl with a sulfate salt, it just won't be as strong of an acid.
Sometimes, mixing two acids could be useful to dissolve small quantities of minerals. HCl+HNO3 or H2SO4+HF are effective mixtures. somehow, whenever you mix two acids you must to use an extractor hood.
