I am working on fabrication of cathode material of Li-ion batteries. For high-temperature (800oC-1000oC) applications, my advisor and I were thinking of cheaper alternatives for Al current collector, whose melting point is just 660.3oC.
If possible, please provide a reference to your answer.

no normally it is not possible to do such Thing due to the corrosion of the steel. Aluminium is used due to the protection layer (in other case at the positive would be used also copper).

for your high-temperature (800oC-1000oC) applications consider as proposal current collector (for Li-ion batteries) the : Nickel (MP:1455° C) foam or Titanium (MP:1660 °C) foam.
I can not to agree with Ioannis. Foam from Ni easy dissolve at high potentials (more than 2.8 V vs. Li0/Li+). But Ti-foam you really can use.

I read that journal paper, and while it had really good data for Al current collector, it didn't say much about SS (wrt higher temperature applications). It did say that SS304 tends to passivate readily, and ethylene carbonate (EC) reduces its stability against corrosion.
The journal paper cited one article where LiMn2O4 was deposited on SS304 using the r.f.-sputtering method, and that deposited film was heat treated at 400oC-700oC. Take away message from it was that Fe and Cr appeared on the film when an elemental analysis was performed with ESCA at 650oC. The reason it discussed was due to the thermal diffusion from the current collector. This resulted in drastic decrease in discharge capacity when heat treated at 600oC-700oC.

I can consider corrosion reaction at SS304 (after reading a couple of journal papers), but how about SS316?
It is said that molybdenum gives SS316 excellent corrosion resistance.
Also, I am using aqueous LiNO3 electrolyte (8M LiNO3 in deionized water). So will corrosion have an effect in this particular situation?

Nickel-foam looks like "GREEN", due to the kinetically protecting Ni-O. So the pure metallic Ni foil is not the same as the suggested commercial Ni-foam for your implication (for HT e.g. 800oC-1000oC).
