Our thesis research has the following questions:
1. What is their level of (variable a)?
2. What is their level of (variable b)?
3. Which of the five components of (variable b) relate to (variable a)?
4. Which of the three components of (variable a) relate to (variable b)?
5. To what extent can (variable a) be correlated with (variable b)?
We are already thinking of using Pearson's for the determining the relationship itself, but what can we use in relating one of the components/sub scale to one variable? We are also using SPSS.

It would not be appropriate to use a parametric statistic such as Pearson's r to examine correlations between non-parametric variables such as scores, which are, in essence, categories. You could, however, use Spearman's r.

There is a difference between Likert scored-items (which are original) and multi-item Likert scales (which are often treated as interval). Pearson's r is not appropriate for ordinal data, but it is widely used with scales that are composed of Liker-scored items.
Hi, everyone. Thank you for your responses. One of the variables we wish to measure is counterproductive work behaviour. We will not need to rank the scores, too. The scores will be interpreted as low, average, high. Both of our instruments use a 5-point likert scale.
