Can we solve a problem for a uni variate equation (boundary value problem) using ordinary differential equations?

As we know in general that partial differential equations are used for multi variable functions and also for boundary value problems. my question is, can we solve one variable (any one space coordinate) boundary value problem using ordinary differential equation. if not what is the reason then?
