To my opinion the subject is of a great importance and interest - we should try to submit a COST action. Moreover, I think that we can think, formulate and prepare a EU 2020 proposal - What you think ??
I think we can try together to make an proposal for EU 2020. So, please let me know about outlines of project that you have in your mind, so that I can do my own homework for preparing the proposal for EU 2020. We can continue our conversation in massage box of you can send me the email in my personal email id: [email protected].
|n order to do so we need few more fellows - at this moment I am trying to find people who could be interested and as well have the necessary facility. Will keep you posted.
thanks a gain for this initiative and bringing my name into play.
After discussion with many people I think a COST action only on soil protists stands no chance as the focus would be too specific. But I will think of alternatives. In any case it is more than useful to push work on soil protists as well as to integrate it with the lack of knowledge on other groups of soil life!
if there are ideas for funding such an international effort to meet and push this forward, let me know!
I agree with you and with all the other fellows - we should find the right 'umbrella" that will be able to allow us to reach our goal.
For example - Standardizing output-based soil biota community in order to maximize surveillance in order to understand soil biota function and improve it in a global climate change era - is a general idea !
I think it is a very good idea. I have no experience with COST action, but what Stefan mention makes sense. We need a broader 'umbrella' (agreed with Yossi). I just saw the discussion, I need time to think a bit about it. So the idea would be to write a COST action, right? I need to dig a bit deeper since I don't really know what COST action does really do. Thanks for launching the discussion !
I would be also very happy to take part in such COST action. Of course, as it has been mentioned before, only mentioning soil protists has no chances to be funded. However, linking them with disease suppressive soils would give more chances
The issue is that we need some more scientific support for the importance of protists in application e.g disease suppression... Stronger and easier in my opinion would be a wider consortium to include more soil biodiversity or even above-belowground interactions... But we can discuss this further, maybe even organise a workshop to outline some plans...?
I came across a review paper (S. Geisen et al. FEMS Microbiology Reviews, 42, 2018, 293–323) which points out soil protists are surprisingly little included in ecotoxicological investigations. Protists are potential bioindicators of soil pollution and rehabilitation as some species respond quickly to fluctuations in the abiotic environment. It would be interesting to connect the research on soil protist communities and the studies on soil pollution and remediation. Furthermore, the applicability of waste materials and by-products as unconventional soil additives has gained increasing attention lately. The effects of such treatments are most commonly assessed by monitoring the changes in soil physico-chemical properties and soil-plant interactions, however, it is important to examine and effects onto soil organisms. ...Just an idea interesting to our group - to link the soil protists with current research in soil pollution/remediation. Best regards.
Dear Friends - I had just received from our Univ. the COST call for a COST Action -
Due date at RA:Thursday, November 22, 2018 - 09:00
Due date at fund:Thursday, November 29, 2018 - 12:00
Type of Award:Directed grants to institutions, research groups etc, Networking/collaboration
Grant Amount:520,000 €
For:4 Years
Type of Submission:Proposal
Method of Submission:Online
General Description:
The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) provides international research funding for researchers to set up their interdisciplinary research networks in Europe and beyond.
Projects can be in any field of research and run for 4 years.
The rules are very clear and would like to receive from each one interested in such action their email in a 48 hours - please try to get in touch with fellows from different European countries - that to your opinion could be interested.
it would be a great honour to get this kind of project going. however, its a bit too short term at least for me and realizing that the chance of getting this funded is 6 % is tough... I would prefer to first get a few more bigger papers out to show the importance and then do such an effort for a bigger group of soil biodiversity- only one (protists) is in my opinion nearly impossible to get funded...
But happy to keep discussing and then get going in the next call!
Yes, I share Stefan's opinion (@Stefan Geisen), I think that we are really short of time here. But we should think about it for the next call and be prepared. If we go for this I would be very happy to join.
Is it a good idea for us to write a review paper to review the latest development in the field and also identify the gaps? If so, we can take it in action. What do you think?
I think there is no need for another review as we published a cumulative one this year https://academic.oup.com/femsre/article-abstract/42/3/293/4855940
