I am not generalizing but whatever I have seen about Politics and Politician in our country some times a thought comes whether the world will be better without Politics and or Politicians. If yes what alternative can we think of ???
Certainly, we may want to insulate certain things from politics. But in order to do so we have to understand politics --its scope and influence. It is perhaps better to ask about the appropriate limits of politics.
The evidence of the ages is that mankind is as much a political animal as a rational animal. Various "no-government" theories never get very far.

A lesson from watching BBC's "Yes Minister" and "Yes Prime Minister" episodes is that civil servants can run the show without a minister (politician). Then we have to put our trust into the civil service machine.
Maybe we can tolerate running the Environment Department, but what about External Affairs, Economy, Defence? Well, if we trust them, then we only need a ceremonial president, head of state. It is up to us to decide.
That's a good question considering the state of the world. I think most organizations, governments included, tend to have overreaching, power hungry, and unqualified leaders who arrive in such positions for their own ends. Anarchism does not seem to be a viable alternative, however, as even if everyone voluntarily worked for the general good, I can't see it as efficient enough to build infrastructure and actually be for the best of the common good.
Democracy does not work badly when not manipulated. However, politicians need to actually represent the people, and the people need to be informed and actually care about others that they don't know rather than have such narrow and corruptible focuses as we do. So though politics may be necessary, what we are seeing which is troublesome and we associate with politics, is not.
Cheers - Jim
PS - Looking at Michael's response, I see a great deal of truth there. As a retired civil servant, I can say that there are a number of them who get things done, in spite of 'leadership,' which I don't think is very likely in a private setting where one does not go to serve others. But as much as I dislike the worst in people that can be brought out in organizational structures, some kind of "organization" seems difficult to avoid.
Michael's response is a viable alternative if not implemented by politicians of course. Worlds best managed organizations run without politics (seemingly though) so why can not a state....
As James said democracy is OK without manipulation True. But it seems all manipulation by leaders, by technology, TRP of media (social), big business houses,... more importantly lack of participation by people, illiteracy (political) of a sizeable proportion of those who actually participate
