I'm looking for someone qualified and interested in identifying and perhaps describing as new a few Miocene crabs from central California. My speciality is mollusks and a friend collected some crab that appear to be new and available for description.
Charles. The specimen resembles Pinnixa galliheri Rathbun, 1932. The manner of preservation makes it difficult to be certain. If you have a bunch of these, perhaps you could send some along so that I could have a good look. Cheers. Rod
Thank you Rodney and they are found with typical Pinnixa galliheri but they are twice the size. Attached is a typical P. galliheri from the same site. Still your the expert.
Charles. As I said, making an identification from a photo, particularly with this preservational style, is dodgy. Send some of them along and I will have a look. rod
.Hi charles, I agree, usually pinnotheridae have smaller size than your sample. Recently Rodney published a new portunid species from the same área, I think, but the sternum of your specimen appears to be very narrow and elongate, this would be congruent with cancroidea. In the Rodney's paper, some cancroidea are cited, you might explore this way. I agree with Rodney that is quite difficult to make statements with those pictures. Cheers.
