I have conducted survey and fieldwork about awareness of and demand for Islamic loans in Norway and I am looking to expand the research. I am particularly interested in work in sociology or anthropology or religious studies.
If you read some french, you could have a look on the following book :
El-Gamal Mahmoud A., La banque et la finance islamiques, Bruxelles, De Boeck Supérieur, 2012, 64 pages. ISBN : 9782804167042. DOI : 10.3917/dbu.elga.2012.01
Also, you can read the 2 articles that are linked, or at least have a look on their bibliographies, specially the english speaking references. The first one concern the hypothesis of a more ethical pratice in islamic finance, the second is argue about the role of both pastiche and mask of this finance.
For english writen articles or books :

Islamism. [2004], Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press.

Christophe, thank you very much for your helpful reply! I will certainly read the work in French you suggest. U have read most of the things you mention in English. Have you worked in this field?
Torkel; I do not have work on this topic / field properly but I've done a 4 hours lecture for students who preparing concourses and this topic was choosen by the national authorities... So that I decide to read a bit, both in french and in english. I do nat have red the english books, only some summaries and also some were in bibliographies. That's why I suggested all. I read, of course, all the articles in order to lecture...
Ivo thank you! I was not aware of this publication. Actually, it seems to confirm what I thought, because it only seems to have chapters about regulatory matters. I think there are very good reasons to believe that far fewer Muslims in Europe in fact would switch to Islamic banks than the number of Muslims who say they are interested in this in the very few surveys that have been conducted.
