After considerable research, I have found several use cases which can be used to exemplify some implementations of AI on law firms. However, there is clearly a disadvantage for this segment when compared to medium or large law firms.
Now for the question, are there key components that we can identify in law firms that have succesfully adopted AI? If so, can these be directly implemented on small firms or are we to find a specific set of methodologies for this group?

I suggest designing a model to find the key components of interest:
1. Using an open questionnaire, ask experts and influential people in law firms to introduce the parameters that affect the success of their offices based on systemic issues and intelligence. 2. Use a series of pairwise comparison questionnaires to determine the effect of each parameter on intelligence and each other. 3. Check the output of the questionnaires in a method based on fuzzy network analysis process. The output of this important part is the three parameters that affect your problem. 4. In the next step, you can design a fuzzy expert system to intelligently process the problem. This expert system can be designed using MATLAB or Clips software.

Major law firms are preparing to incorporate AI at a speedier pace than ever before in 2019, as the anticipated industrialization of legal services picks up steam. Client pressures have been mounting on law firms—often slow technology adopters—to address concerns that old tech is keeping bills unnecessarily high. Clients are demanding that firms use AI-infused tools to speed work, lower costs, and provide better information.
My wife is a lawyer. She has worked as a private attorney, as a prosecuting attorney, and as a judge. As a judge, she presently sees 200 or minor cases every two weeks. As a prosecuting attorney she is responsible for prosecuting an endless sequence of complicated homicide cases. I am quite familiar with the various machinations (yes that is a real word) of Law. I have worked in the field of Artificial Intelligence, (and specifically domain specific artificial intelligence) for more than 30 years.
First a question is, "Why are you asking?" "Is it because continuous AI advertising gives you a sense that you may be missing some opportunity? A decision to adopt "AI" requires careful study of technology, its effectiveness, its suitability for use in law (don't forget the current capabilities of value that are currently available from companies such as Lexis/Nexis) and its suitability for the operation of your law firm. This assessment is generally beyond the capability of a law firm whether small or large. If you hire a consulting firm to advise you, it s guaranteed that they will recommend a long term contract for study, and then for implementing a large and expensive project, because it is in their best interest.
Now a comment. Today there is no useful, commonly used definition of AI. There are many-many (many squared) programs, systems, and algorithms, each doing something specific that are labeled AI. Some do nothing more than statistical analysis. Some facial recognition. Some predict the path of hurricanes.
If you are in criminal law, you could benefit from analysis of criminal prosecution and defense to identify aspects of cases, the filings, arguments presented in courts, arguments presented in appeals, the win/loss records of the attorneys to determine if there is some factor that correlates to win and loss. (but this is primarily statistics and I would not characterize as artificial intelligence)
Such analysis could be the foundation of a new start-up business or industry, but would be prohibitively difficult and expensive for a law firm whether small or large.
