I want to create mathematics quizzes making use of Moodle and WIRIS and replace the paper and pencil assessments, which is problematic for Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners. Anyone ever tried it or have any suggestions?
Nolan, I've not used WIRIS, but I'm wondering if you're aware that you could use TeX Notation in Moodle. That is what is widely used for math and science quiz questions at our university.
I think your approach could definitely work, but my advice would be to develop deep wells of questions so that students see difference questions, not just a standard set.
Aurea, Moodle is a CMS or a LMS, which ever way you look at it, meaning that it's a online learning environment where courses can be constructed with the use of the tools in Moodle i.e. Lesson, Quiz, WIKI, Assignment, Glossary, Database, Forum, Chat etc. Furthermore, plugins can be added to Moodle which enhances Moodle's capability, like WIRIS. WIRIS is a CAS with a WIRIS editor which can be used to construct mathematics and science quizzes. For more info please follow the links:
Ray, I've used LaTex and DragMath, but it doesn't display as I want it to display. Furthermore, I need learners to input or type maths answers through using an editor, which is why I chose WIRIS. Please see attachment below.
That is an excellent question... Our research project is trying to decide that. We are trying to determine what tool is the best for D/HH students. To measure the knowledge of any math problem through online?? I am open to that idea. One training you might want to think about... How to get the student to explain the whole process... (they need to know how to use math equator). Details explanation is my number 1 priority. To do this on the laptop/ipad/desktop/etc could bored our students. As soon as we get a good software to have the ability to write "algebraically", then I am all for it.
Thanks for your input, Keith, highly appreciated. At the moment I am using Poodll, a plugin in Moodle for my Deaf and H/H learners to explain their answers via sign language. It is a question type in Moodle, so learners can record their answers using the webcam or ipad. It is directly captured in Moodle and marked accordingly. With Poodll they can also write their answers within Moodle as a means to explain their thinking. Within this question type you can choose whether learners must provide you with a video, picture or mp3 response. They can also use the whiteboard drawing option.
