For my college thesis, I've wanted to measure reflectance in a coastal dune, and I wanted to analyze that reflectance in natural light conditions, so is it possible for me to do it without the light source and that way the light "source" would be ambient light?
Light sources are a crucial component of spectrometers and spectrophotometers, as they provide the necessary energy needed for the excitation that spectral transition requires. So, in my opinion, you can't use it without a light source.
You can record the spectrum of the reflected daylight and you will get some cues about the reflectance of the objects. But without standardized laboratory conditions with a specified light source you will not be able to calculate the reflectance. Daylight changes so quickly with atmospheric conditions, that it's impossible to use it a s a reference. Also your measurement in the dunes will include light that is not reflected from your object.
