I have some CdSe/ZnS quantum dots with some capping ligands that make it hydrophilic enough to suspend in water. I want to measure the band gap energy. Can I derive the band gap energy value from a fluorescence spectra from a spectrofluorometer, or from the spectra obtained from a UV-VIS spectrophotometer? I'm looking for a fairly simple way.... Thank you.
We usually calculate QD band gaps with using a position of maximum of exciton band in absorption spectra. You can find an empirical equation for CdSe in this paper: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/cm034081k
Of course ZnS shell and organic ligands have some influence on it, but usually it is neglible
Agree with Dhananjay Bodas. For me the simplest way to calculate the band gap is to find threshold on the absorbance spectrum.
