There is a growing body of research and application in Resiliency Leadership you may want to explore. Harvard has new courses and even programs on the topic.

While some of it may not be directly related to Health Care, all of it is within the scope of your context. And there are case studies in Health Care.

A simple search in your university database (Ebsco Host or ABI Inform, or whatever your university uses) should reveal what is scholarly - but you can also go directly to many universities that share their research - even for a doctoral level thesis.

Also, look at the physics side of the issue by searching Stochastic Events - for example, search: Stochastic Events and Leadership (or other words like Management). There are some Journals that are Trade related and so they use a different language but explore the same phenomena.

P.S. I worked in a very large hospital system that was a Level 1 Regional Trauma Center and was a part of the Team that conducted training at all levels (Physicians, Nurses, Admin, etc). That was not recently, but, I went on to study Disaster Response in part because of what I knew should happen and what I experienced first-hand did not happen in a major crisis (more than once and in more than one country and context). Many of the lessons learned over the years in the study of crisis response and resiliency are derived from Emergency Trauma lessons. I mention this because I hope you will widen your search in terms of research - it may not show up so specifically (health care) but the research is no less valuable).

Dear Dale,

before reading on, consider that I am not well-versed in the requirements for a doctoral dissertation in your neck of the woods.

That said, where I come from, doctoral dissertations come in two forms: monographs ("big book") and article/essay-based. In my experience these two each have their strengths and weaknesses, but (and this is the relevant part), they demand different overarching research approaches.

The article-based needs to focus on a number of closely related topics, each formulated as an RQ of its own, and (most importantly) each of those RQ's need to be both relevant in impact and strictly limited in scope (otherwise you'll have trouble getting them published).

The monograph route is suitable when you know that the topic you're going to focus on is by no means limited enough to be able to cram it into a number of separate publications. But also here it is important to pre-empt scope creep and try to stake out an unequivocal boundary (what is part of the answer to the RQ and what is not). This is often easier said than done when the in-scope topics turn out to have fuzzy/leaky boundaries (e.g. is there a clear definition of emergency preparedness and is that a qualitative, quantitative or mixed metric? )

So what you will want to consider is what kinds of implications the alternative dissertation approaches entail for the kinds of RQ's you will want to set up.

But, and here I speak from costly experience, it is crucial for you to at all times be clear on what your concepts mean (and be prepared to explain them). Looking at your draft RQ: "What is the relationship between managers' leadership style and emergency preparedness in Long-Term Care?" I have a number of devil's advocate questions for you:

- "What is the relationship" Are you talking correlation or causation? Are you assuming that there is only one relationship? Why are you satisfied with identifying the relationship , and why are you not looking at the mechanism behind that relationship (the 'ultimate cause')?

- Who do you conceive of as 'managers' in this setting?

- "leadership styles", which model/framework are you using and why that one?

- define "emergency preparedness". Where is the boundary between business-as-usual and emergency, and is there an upper limit to what constitutes an emergency (is it when FEMA comes knocking)? How do you define preparedness and what kind of metric is it?

- Your definition of LTC... There might be a clear, local delineation of what constitutes LTC, but if you're hoping for a non-regional audience, it might be useful to (in parallel) define LTC in general terms (so that a health care admin in, say, Germany/Taiwan could relate your findings to their local settings)
