I have an AOM (ATM-801A2) with a deflection driver (DE-1101). I wanted to create a Gaussian pulse for an ECDL laser using this. The driver I have consist only a FM input option beside the RF output port. So, is it possible to create a Gaussian pulse by using a pulse generator to the FM input?
There should be no problem in using this modulator with amplitude modulation, but you cannot use a deflection driver for this purpose. If you connect a pulse generator to the FM input, this will change the deflection angle of the diffracted beam. It will also shift the frequency of the diffracted light accordingly, but there is no immediate effect on the amplitude. However, if the range of the angular deflection is large enough, you can probably place a suitable aperture somewhere to convert the deflection angle modulation into an effective amplitude modulation. This is really only a workaround and far away from an ideal amplitude modulation. Neither would I expect that you can generate overly short pulses with this, but it may prove sufficient for your application.
