I found a scale which is developed as 5 point likert type by author. I want to use this scale but with a little bit more sensibility. So that's why I want to convert it to 7 or 11 point likert type.
Is this possible or should I use it as author's suggesting 5 point?

Your question is very interesting. If you want to measure the same phenomena that the author has measure you should use the same 5 point scale because it was validated. Although that, if in your research it is important to change the scale in order to have more sensitivity you need to validate that first with a new population in order to prove the suitability of the instrument to the data.

Thanks for your answer. I never thought that it's about validation. So do authors check the likert's validation while scale development process? Or should we do it because we are changing the likert type?

The question is if you want to use exactly the same likert scale in the same population or if your want to aply it to another population/reality changing the scale points. In the second case it is necessary, after data collection, to validate it. It could be done with some statistical tests like alfa de cronbach and a principal components analisis.
