I would like to know whether I first have to calculate the coherence between two signals over the entire frequency spectrum in matlab and summarize the specific frequency bands from these values or can I already calculate the coherence frequency-band-specifically?
I usually use the Fieldtrip toolbox to compute connectivity measures. This toolbox allows you to specify the frequency band of your interest to compute the coherence, so you can avoid computing the whole spectrum. Personally I rather compute the whole spectrum and then zoom into the range of my interest but I do it just to get the whole picture of how the connectivity changes according to the frequency. Of course you should also consider that computation time would be shorter if you focus on a frequency band but if this is not a significative constrain go for the whole spectrum, you might find something interesting.
