I am convinced that this field will gain increasing importance and it is already developing rapidly. The free access to data via GEOSS, INSPIRE, GBIF, WDPA, and other data bases allows for new approaches in conservation biogeography via combining different sources of big data.

as a matter of fact, a more explicit answer of mine got lost, but you can find the reference to an open access publication that we did recently in this field, here it was about national parks, man and biosphere reserves, and data bases from the european union about species that are required to be reported by the member states.

Using R there are several ways. Please check the packages specieesgeocodeR,sampbias and CoordinateCleaner, developed by Alex Zizka.

These allow you to extract information from GBIF and quantify sampling bias, flag potential erroneous records (such as duplicates, sea-occurrences for terrestrial species, or records in the centroid of countries) and estimate EOO and AOO. Furthermore you can then use the ranges calculated with these packages to estimate conservation categories with the ConR package.

Several of our research papers are based on spatial modeling of observational data (SDM) from regional geodatabases (endemic plants, gorilla, elephant, Phytophthora). Although the data were available in principle, the actual access and data quality check represented in most cases a substantial timeshare within the research projects.

At the countrywide scale (Namibia), my experience with geodatabases of taxa, or rather the lack of their use in Strategic Environmental Assessment has been reported.

On the continental scale, raw geodata of some taxa (wild boar, great bustard), across Eurasia showed to be so uneven in their coverage and quality, that considerable efforts in extrapolation is required for the intended purposes.

On the intercontinental scale, geodatasets of Phytophthora taxon and more so of their environmental predictor variables for closing the data gaps were so different that transferability and comparison across continents seems only possible with great effort, if at all.

Finally, we need to consider, that many potentially very useful geodatasets exists in private or public hands that are unlikely to be shared for good reasons. These include the geodatabases of national bird societies, hunting associations, national hunting regulations.
