I m working on biosafety evaluation of GMO microalgae, can anyone guide me which is better and acceptable method (lyophilisation or simple heat drying) for drying as i am going to use it as feed for fish? Also after harvesting pellet of algae, at what temperature i can store before drying, 4 C or -20 C, and for how long without affecting cell integrity?
Many published articles discussing many different methods of the drying of algae , and the most of these results suggested that algae should being dried in a Vacuum Tray Dryer at 60°C under varied pressure conditions and under designed double condenser system. Other published articles suggested The using of open sun as drying method as solar conduction dryer (SCD) was also used for algae drying.many Comparative studies between open sun drying and solar conduction dryer were done and it was found that the solar conduction dryer gives high performance than the open sun drying. Lyophilization.
By lyophilization, the compounds contained in the cell cytoplasm or in the cell organelles are preserved better than in heat drying according to the literature. as an example by heat drying cyanotoxins like toxic compounds tends to come out of the cell due to the cell burst. and can`t find the correct composition of the cell contains by heat drying.
According to the study purpose, it would be better to select the drying method initially, if the fish feed is prepared commercially better to go for the heat drying method which is cheaper than the lyophilization.
4°C would be recommended.
After 4°C, the water expands when freezing which ultimately destroys the cell compounds due to the expansion of water. However, at 4°C reasonable microbial activities can be observed in the samples.
I recommend freeze-drying. It preserves all the vitamins and other heat-sensitive micro and macro nutrients of the algae if you use them for fish as feed. If you use freeze-drying, you can store algae in -20 just after harvesting.
