Can anyone suggest references to understand the concept and planning of traditional walled settlements?

I want to assess the attributes of traditional walled cities in India. Any suggestions for literature on them explaining their urban planning ideologies, their evolution, sustainability etc and how they form a historic urban landscape.

The only reference I know about is this old article by Rory Fonseca.
