I am planning to start a project in power system which involves load flow calculation. It may also require modifications like changing the Jacobian elements? So, can you suggest me software which are free for these. I've heard about matpower and psat. Can anyone recommend me out of these two or can propose a better one for my task?
MATPOWER is excellent. You can also code it in GAMS.
Yes, Matpower. But, depending on how complicated your problem is; you can even write your own code to solve your power flow. You said, you plan to change Jacobian elements? then, it is better you write your own code and do whatever you want!!
Thanks for the answers guys, As I told you I need to modify for e.g Jacobian, how about haadi saadat programs for it? My buses might be quite large so I'm trying to avoid coding as far as possible!
MatPower is a better tool. you can use the haadi saadat programs...
Matpower is an open source, so you can change the code as you like.
It will not be a lot of work if you just want to change elements of Jacobian matrix.
you said, buses might be large? this is just about 'dimension' not about the complexity of Jacobian elements. With larger number of buses, you need to expand your dimensions.

Matpower is a good open source program for load flow analysis.
Mapower is good option compared to Haadi saadt programs since matpower has powerful yet simple data structure which can be used for any type of analysis. Though you have to spend some time in understanding its architecture its worthy of learning.
