As you know, Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world and suffers the punishment of recurrent droughts and famines. They have a lack of drinking water and sanitation infrastructure. This brings problems of Poverty, unhealthiness and lack of hygiene. The women who have the greatest social damage are women and girls who have to fetch water and can not go to school. So, the conservation and development of natural resources around water sources and pipes with biological and physical means is a good objective. On the other hand, the harvests depend exclusively on rainfall, which is scarce. So, if I were in your place, I would try to approach from my area of expertise, to contribute to improve those living conditions. From your position, you could work on drought-resistant plants; in plants with a high nutritional content; in plants with bactericidal properties or vermicity, etc. In short, I would like to be a real contribution, not to do a study that adds to many more that are academically cute but that do not aim to solve more immediate and real problems.
