There are many methods for obtaining cellulose from wood, but it is hard to separate the three main components (cellulose, homicellulose and lignin). Most of these methods are based on treatment with chemicals like NaOH and Na2S at high temperature in Kraft pulp procedure, for instance.

the methods are depending on what use of cellulose you will done. there are many ways and steps. for example if you want pure cellulose you should do the following steps:-

1- prehydrolysis (e.g. by 2% mineral acid HCl or H2SO4 for 2 hr at 120 C and cosisitency 10%) this will help in opening the fibers of cellulose and getting rid of most of hemicellulose

2- pulping of the result by say for example 15% NaOH and 1:6 or 1:7 liquor ratio at 170 C in an autoclave for 2 hr (this step will help in cooking cellulose fiber in order to get rid of lignin .....etc

3- the pulp need to be bleached to obtain cellulose. this can be done by using successive steps of sodium chlorite or hypochlorite.

Cellulose was discovered (if I remember this correctly) as the residue of wood being boiled in HNO3. This might be a way to (very easily, using a primitive and cheap method) to produce it if purity and 100% yield are not of huge importance.
