I want to make small size high definition movie from MATLAB figure output, which updates every loop and total number of loops can be upto 1000. I have used .mpeg and .avi outputs. MATLAB produces very big size files even for very low resolutions.
Can anyone please help me with this? I want small size, upto 10mb maximum, and HD movies from matlab figure output.
I assume you are using VideoWriter class. Have you tried to set 'VideoCompressionMethod' to 'H.264'?
You can also try 'movie2avi' with a built-in or custom video compression codec.
If this will not solve your problem, I think you would have to use an external movie-making tool to compress video.
Andrew, as you can see in this comparison, 'movie2avi' creates uncompressed video ('compression' set to 'none') with 10 frames per second, while VideoWriter for MPEG-4 uses H.264 compression with 15 frames per second. Function 'imwrite' on the other hand creates a gif file.
During my tests I have achieved a video file ~3 times smaller with 'movie2avi' ('compression' set to external codec 'x264' - x264vfw 38.2274.36885) than with VideoWriter MPEG-4 and ~30% smaller than with 'imwrite'. Advantage of this method is that you can use any external codec you want (it must be registered in your system).

I had such a problem. Changing the options of standard functions reduces file size but degrades the quality of the film. The best solution for me was to use the library mmwrite.

I am able to make high quality movies from matlab graph output, but the file sizes are too big to send them via email. I have tried compressing them but the video quality drops too much. I want a HD and low size video.

You can try to re-encode your movie using Avidemux or any other movie editing software. As has been said, some of the better codecs are H264 and XVID. There is an option in Avidemux where yo can choose the size you would like and it will try to accomodate that choice.
Abdullah, I am not an expert in the video encoding field, but I think that for now using H.264 with Hi10p will be your best choice (as I said before I recommend x264). You will have to wait until HEVC (H.265) becomes a usable standard.

Sounds like you need scalable vector graphics. Someone has done this for Matlab

You can then concatenate the frames into a flash movie or SVG animation.
I also use the solution of Roger Tattersall. You can use ImageMagik. I do the following: 1) create high-quality images 2) convert images to gif 3) convert gif to avi (or mp4). If I prodice directly avi the result is not as good as following steps 1), 2) and 3).
