George and I researched capital-intensive industries (glass, paper, steel, solar, auto parts) in which China had no comparative advantage, but in which the country moved swiftly to become the world's largest manufacturer and exporter. In these industries, our research identified subsidies and access to easy capital as one of China's key advantages, not cheap labor. Some of this research is in our book
