The recorded calls will later be used for playback experiments.
I currently have an excellent FOXPRO speaker system for playback experiments, but am on the market for a high-quality microphone set-up to record audio that can be converted to mp3 format.
Ideally, this will be able to be attached to my vehicle or easily held to record hyena whoops/giggles and lion roars while at kill sites.
If anyone has advice on good equipment, please get in touch.

I work on frog bioacoustics and we have fared very well with Marantz PMD recorders (e.g. 661) and Sennheiser mics (ME 66 with a K2 power module). I have no idea if these equipments are old fashioned but at least their quality was and is still excellent. Good luck in your research!

Arjun - I recommend you look at Elliot and Gopalaswamy (2016). This provides the most innovative way to date. It uses a search encounter method using identity and spatial locations of individuals (which you are already doing driving around everyday). We‘ve just applied this very successfully in Uganda and it is now being used country-wise in Kenya. Arjun, if you use call ups you will be producing estimates with high levels of variance around them. Additionally you do not capitalise on the wealth of information garnered during the spatial and density estimation process (which you won’t get from call ups - call ups will give you a crude abundance). Guess you got to ask yourself this: do you want to use an antiquated method which will be of little use to management decisions (because you do not use individual ID) or do you want to produce robust measures of density (and lay the framework for estimating birth, death, immigration and emigration).
