If you want to learn other software tools it may be interesting to learn SIMIO or AnyLogic.

The most theoretical way to learn discrete event simulation is the DEVS theory, where is also software available in public domain.

We developed a free MATLAB toolbox MatlabGPSS. However, you should be familar with MATLAB or GPSS.

You may want to try microsimulation software but some coding may be required. VISIM AIMSUN or Paramics work fine.

This may help you. There is an interesting article that you can read (http://www.massey.ac.nz/~kahawick/cstn/095/cstn-095.pdf) with six software compared. Also, by experience the not free software every year come up with new and interesting features.

You can try MATSim. It is an open source software.

I'd recommend SLX from Wolverine Software. Several transportation systems have been successfully modeled with SLX.

For traffic simulation, you can try the open source package at http://sumo-sim.org

You can try http://www.dcc.fc.up.pt/~rjf/vns/ if you are comfortable with computer network terms.

If you are comfortable with any programming language, you can try NS-3 or OMNeT++.

You might also want to have a look at http://www.runthemodel.com/ to get some new ideas and a glance at just another nice simulation software package

I agree with Isidro Ramos Torres -- I teach a university master's-level course in simulation using SImio, including for transportation; it has proved excellent, in power, ease of learning and use, and in quality and promptness of support.

Hi, you may try Jeppsen or Maris simulation software for Marine Transport. 

Did you try Simio?

I use Promodel and I like it because is very simple to construct the models.

You can try using the simulation software, Simio. 

A fellow RG member and his team has written something implemented in MATHEMATICA using simulated annealing.

AnyLogic superb for this purpose; Simio also well-suited (I use Simio in my graduate simulation course).

I recently went to a seminar of VISSIM Traffic. It seems very appropriate for the problem you are presenting.

I concur with Simio. It is very nice and powerful (it may be a bit overwhelming in the beginning, but once you get it, you will like it). Simul8 also could be interesting (very different than others)
