MANAGED EDUCATION AND LABOR MANAGEMENT
– THE CASE OF TOYOTA “CORPORATE CASTLE TOWNS” –
ABSTRACT
This paper provides a translation of a Japanese-language journal article of the same title authored by Professor Emeritus Masaki Saruta of Chukyo University, Nagoya in 1992, to introduce the Japanese phenomenon of managed education in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, the home of the Toyota Motor Corporation. This and Saruta’s other numerous works provide insight into the lifestyles of Japanese workers who live and work in the corporate castle towns that feed Toyota. The translation is followed by a summary of the themes of Saruta’s paper, which include: Toyota’s abnormal level of influence over local government, a closed labor market, homogeneity of labor, and a unique education system of managed education. These factors are found to result in a pool of labor that drives the sustainability of the Toyota Way philosophy and resulting Toyota Production System.
