The book is intended for a Master level course addressing students who have basic courses in stream and freshwater ecology. The main topics in the course will be restoration methods and effects of restoration efforts on biological quality elements.
I noticed two main works in my (not exhaustive) literature research.
1. Stream and Watershed Restoration: A guide to restoring riverine processes and habitats (2012) Eds: Roni & Beechie
2. River restoration: Managing the uncertainty in restoring physical habitat (2008) Eds: Darby & Sear
Especially the option No 1 seems appealing to me, but I would really appreciate some comments and advice from anyone with experience with these or other books.

Montgomery, D.R., Bolton, S.M. Hydrogeomorphic variability and river restoration. p. 39-80. En: WISSMAR, R.C.; BISSON, P.A. Strategies for restoring river systems. Bethesda : The American fisheries society, 2003.
Also for restoration and water quality analysis you can work with bioindicators, for instance The Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) scoring system. This method of assessing water quality using the families of insects - e.g. mayflies and stoneflies - and other aquatic invertebrates such as freshwater shrimps present in a river. Species are allotted points to rank their importance in the ecosystem, the less tolerant a group of invertebrates is to pollution the higher the points they are allotted.

Thanks for your replies and suggested readings. I am not unfamliar with stream ecology or restoration practices. Stream ecology is my subject and I have in several cases been involved in restoration research.
My question / inquiry is more directed to finding suitable literature for students in a course on stream restoration. I have data and literature to work with cases on stream restoration, but I wish to avoid including too much primary literature in my teaching - rather use actual book chapters that are often easier to read for students and not so condensed with respect to iformation. The course is supposed to give an overview of possible restoration efforts and potential improvements for biological quality elements (here I will give exercises on fish, macroinvertebrates and macrophytes).
I will look into the book and book chapter suggested by Luis - but is more likely interested in newer literature. To my knowledge, the restoration practices and effect evaluations have progressed quite a lot during the last decade.

I suggest you look up Dave Rosgen's approach at www.wildlandhydrology.com. It is very comprehensive in developing natural channel design to restore stream function and habitats. He has quite a few free resources to look through. Also USDA - NRCS Engineering Handbook, Part 650 has some of Rosgens ideas and also various engineeering approaches to stream restoration and on the internet.
