I have a unknown plant sample extract of which is catalizing some biochemical activity efficiently. But I have no clue what is it. Can anyone please identify the plant? The picture is given below.
Dr Singh is correct. This is Selaginella willdenowii (Desv. ex Poir.) Baker, even though the determiantion should be verified by the comparison of the material itself with authenticated specimens. The species is commonly and easily cultivated in greenhouses. It is known as "peacock fern", in reference to the characteristic blue iridescence of its leaves, well visible on the photograph. It was originally described from India but is probably widespread in Old World tropical countries.
Hi, it certainly is a Selaginella. As to the species name a good choice would be, as stated before, Selaginella willdenowii (Desv.) Baker. I only hesitate to give a definitive answer because the picture shown depicts a rather small, erect plant, whereas usually Selaginella willdenowii, when fully grown, has a climbing habit. Furthermore, there are several phytochemical studies showing bioactivity in this species. The information given by Professor Greuter and Drs. Prado and Susmitha is correct. Selaginella willdenowii is also cultivated in continental U.S.A., West Indies, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador where sometimes it could be found as a naturalized plant.
