Hi Joanna, do you mean mixed methods or multiple modalities? If mixed methods, then you have some quantitative data, I'd assume, and NVivo would be a good choice because you can code your qualitative data quantitatively and export it, plus any descriptive data you have, to SPSS. If you mean multi-modal data (several different kinds of data gathered from different sources, but all of it the same basic kind of data, like all qualitative, or all quant), then I'd go with Atlas.ti because it's a bit more flexible and you can get it for the iPad. Which, hey, who doesn't like total portability? But honestly, I've used both, and regardless of which you choose, you'll be well-supported. I guess my final recommendation is this: go with the program your immediate peers use, because when you ultimately need help, grabbing a colleague down the hall is a heck of a lot faster than calling a support center or finding a super user. I use Nvivo but it currently only works for PC I am an anthropologist do i need to be able to deal with all sorts of interview and participant observation data plus text (written, music film etc analysis. It works well for my needs. It is also a lot easier to learn how to use now. A very flesible tool

Have a look to Dedoose (a cross-platform app for analyzing text, video, and spreadsheet data that develops qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research. It works with Windows, Mac/OSX, Linux, iOS, and Android. I used to work with Atlas, Nvivo, MaxQda and several free caqdas packages that worked fine. But now with Dedoose I can access easily my data wherever I go and fully share the process of analysis with members of my team.

Just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone who has given feedback so far. This is the first time I´ve posted a question here and it has been so useful! Has anyone used dedoose.com a free web-based qual analysis package? Only just heard of it....

I also use Nvivo. I endorse Maria-Jose Torrejon´s and Craig Proulx´s responses. I do not share the claims that Stata or SPSS are qualitative analysis software. These are statistical packages. You can run a "statistical analysis" of "qualitative data", by transformig it first in quantitative data, such as frequencies. But "qualitative analysis" is a quite different business and Stata and SPSS don´t do it.

Nvivo ofers a few tools for quantitative content analysis of transcripts, such as frequency counts, OR cluster analysis. But if you need these kind of tools A LOT, I think Provalis Prosuite is the most powerful option, as it consists of three programmes: one for qualitative analysis (QDAMiner), one content quantitative analysis and text mining (Wordstsat) and one for statistical analysis (Simstat).

If it results too expensive for your purpose you can consider Dedoose, wich has similar tools but runs on the cloud on a pay for use basis.

In my case I used Excel and data management software "EndNote", but you can use NVIVO if you like. Excel helped my to write codes that represent 1- different opinion of literature review and 2- the theory I use 3- my findings from the exploratory work. I write the codes in both Excel and EndNote. The codes helped my a lot to structure and restructure my findings. My advice is to identify what you want in small list. then give code to each item. Then link these codes to your data. It is simple and make you manage your data.

Dear Joanna, this might sound like the other answers I gave to this kind of question:

- first it depends on what is your qualitative analysis method? => there are different programms supporting different methodological options (content analysis, grounded theory, etc)

- mixed methods is something you have with quite a many of the classical programs like Atlas.ti, NVivo, MAXQDA, AQUAD => this also depends 'how mixed' you want to have it, how much and which kind of 'statistics' you want to have

So first, try to be very precise and clear about your analysis method, only then ask for a tool to help you with that method.

I agree with many that NVivo is a great proprietary software and the latest version allows you to combine quali and quanti data. But fundamentally, you have to determine what your true analytical needs are because each software has its own strengths and weaknesses. I would suggest you to consult Lewins and Silver’s (2007) Using Software in Qualitative Research: A Step-by-Step Guide as a way to guide your reflection. A new version of their book is expected in 2014. Making a commitment with a software should be taken seriously since it generally implies a significant investment of time and “psychic energy” (à la Mihály Csíkszentmihályi).

Additionally, I would recommend you to consider free and open source products (F-CAQDAS) that are becoming true alternatives to paying software for three reasons: 1) the overall quality of some of the products is now comparable to that of proprietary programs, 2) they often represent a simpler solution to basic analytical needs (why drive a Lamborghini if all you need is a simple sedan?), and 3) they make the sharing data and experience with students more accessible due to the absence of money barrier. Among all (so far, I found 13 different F-CAQDAS currently available on the web), I would suggest you to have a look at the following:

-QDA Miner Lite

-Weft QDA

-RQDA

-CATMA 4 (cloud computing)

-AQUAD 7

QDA Miner Lite is the free (and limited) version of QDA Miner. It is well built for qualitative analysis. Weft QDA is a simple program with an efficient graphic user interface (GUI) that allows for good open and axial coding and is managed with SQLite which adds some powerful database analysis power to the researcher. RQDA is a more advanced program than Weft QDA because it combines a simple yet interesting GUI, a command line built in R language (which means that you can combine any other qualitative or quantitative R package that you like) and is also supported by SQLite. CATMA and AQUAD are more complex programs, have more built-in functions in their GUI, but also take longer to master than the three previous solutions.

Regarding mixed methods, I do not think myself that using a single software combining both qual and quant approaches is necessarily needed (I guess it depends on the researcher). Here again, I would recommend you to consider free software like R (that now has an interesting GUI called R Commander) or even PSPP (a free alternative to SPSS).

Just want to thank everyone who contributed to this discussion. Very helpful. I have been using the Language Analysis software by James Pennebaker. Gives word usage counts that can be imported into stat package. Looking at journals pre and post intervention on death awareness. Very encouraging results so far.

Just looked up Atlas. seems its not for Mac. Has anyone tried to adapt? Or is there some better program for content analysis across genres? Tx

Excel and SPSS (especially their newer versions) are useful computer programs for both qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

To use Atlas. in your Mac, you need to install the "Parallels Desktop" for Mac, so you can run both Windows and Mac OS X applications.

Hi. Largely depends on your data and the study objective. Leximancer can be an option for a very basic level of data analysis. Excel itself can be used to help some basic analysis. However, Nvivo sounds good for larger amounts of data and more meaningful results.

Either NVivo, ATLAS. ti or MAXQDA will do. You can look for a book written by Graham Gibbs called "Analyzing Qualitative Data" for details on how to use those three software. i personally use MAXQDA.

I have worked with maxQda - works perfect and the company will publish a version for Apple in december.

I have used atlas.ti and so have my students. It takes some effort to prepare your files, say interview transcripts, for Atlas.ti. It is worthwhile, if you want to do a lot of analysis. Otherwise using simple search functions may do the counting of concepts for you.

I have used HyperRESEARCH for Mac. Very nice and simple.

I have used Nvivo and SPSS for many years. Since 2005, I use R (http://www.r-project.org/) for both quantitative and qualitative analysis. R is a free and open source project, with a very active community. I recommend the RQDA - Qualitative Data Analysis package for R - (http://rqda.r-forge.r-project.org) and TM - Text Mining package for R (http://tm.r-forge.r-project.org).

You can take your business accounting by hand. But it is esier with a calculator and it is far better with a spreadsheet. It is the same with qualitative analysis software. Once you have used a QDA software Excel and Word will never seem adecuate enough.

I think all mentioned programs can be suitable for your data analysis. I use WebQDA because of its potentialities like: is very easy to learn, very intuitive; you can analyse photos, music or text; doesn´t slow down your pc because data is on the server, so you can access anytime and anywhere and you can work the project with your supervisor or co workers at same time; the support team is very quick giving help and solving problems and the licence is not too expensive. Atlas.ti is excellent although a bit clunky to learn. File sharing is tricky if more than one coder is involved but support is excellent.

I ve used Nvivo and Atlas ti and finally decided to stick to Atlas ti for the reason of support group. Support group for Atlas ti in my area is good , there are training, classes, workshops and even user group where we can ask questions on the dumbest thing about using the software. So my advice is you might want to consider the presence of support group before purchasing the software. it can be annoying to keep emailing the help desk for small information. asking in user support group gives faster response and the best part is learning from the other people mistakes/ questions.

In terms of features and function between the two, for my case, not much significant difference.

There is another Q & A on this topic with over 100 relatively recent replies. The Question is: "Can you recommend a software for analyzing qualitative data (interview transcripts)?" and it is listed under "Qualitative Data Analysis." (That topic seems to overlap heavily with the current listing of Qualitative Analysis" but this sort of thing seems to be all too common in RG.)

The general sense of that discussion is that all the major software packages do pretty much the same thing. So whether you use Atlas.ti, NVivo, Max QDA, or Dedoose is mostly an issue of which feels most comfortable to you.

With regard to Mixed Methods, the two that are most explicit about offering analysis tools in this regard seem to be Max QDA and Dedoose. I am familiar with both of them, and what they offer is basically an spreadsheet format where the cases are rows and then you can designate various things as variables in the columns. Note that this basically assumes that you are dealing with something like interview data, which creates a clear case-like "unit of analysis."

NOte, however, that this is mostly an issue of "explicit" emphasis on Mixed Methods, since all the major software packages allow you to organize (and export) your data as spreadsheets.

In my view - it is more effective not to use computer programs.

I think it is important to have a very detailed and nuanced understanding of the data - that is best acquired by listening to taped transcripts or reading the transcripts. Using a computer program distances you from the data in a way that is not helpful.

Moreover, it takes longer to learn how to use some programs, e.g., Atlas TI than to analyze the data.

You can use SPSS by analyzing frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation.It is an useful computer program.

All of the major qualitative data analysis programs have ways of dealing with the kinds of variables that come from survey-oriented data (e.g., each of a set of interviews might have additional data on age, gender, region, etc.). Alternatively, you could be working primarily with a survey that includes a small amount of open-ended data that you want to code with qualitative data analysis (QDA) software.

Either way, most of the QDA packages support importing and exporting with Excel ( using ID numbers for "merging" the data).

Dedoose probably does more in the way of advertising these features, but Max QDA certainly has the same capacities. Both programs call this a "mixed methods" approach, but most people seem to be using these tools for content-analytic counting of codes from the qualitative data, which I personally think is a pretty weak form of mixed methods.

It looks like you have quite some choice, and I think the comments about institutional support is important. I personally have experience with Nvivo and SPSS. I found NVivo easy to pick up and use for coding interview content, but initially I think rereading your interviews to get a really good feel is very important before diving head long into NVivo. Otherwise everything will tend to get coded and thats where its starts to get less manageable if you are on a fairly tight timeframe.

From a basic mixed methods perspective, using the EXPLORE tab on NVivo and then setting up a matrix through the 'queries' link can be a way to count content codes. Using this matrix coding I have then transferred data across into spss for statistical analysis.

I would recommend Atlas.ti for your qualitative data and it is more user-friendly than other softwares like Nvivo.

Many of our PhD students have used Atlas.ti with some success. The usual complaint was that preparing texts (like interview reports) took too much time and that just counting words by using WORD search function is much faster. It depends on the volume of qualitative data, whether Atlas.ti is useful. .

Like Ercilia García Álvarez noted below, she used Dedoose, and I used Dedoose recently.

One of the outstanding features of Dedoose lies in the fact that once you have your codes defined, you can assign a range of numeric weights to the codes. Then, when you apply the codes to the text of your transcripts, you can weight the text excerpt based on mood and emphasis. Thus, I took eleven propositions for starting an insider threat program, and interviewed seven participants. I was able to numerically weight their responses and get a resulting graph of which practices are most important at the beginning of an insider threat program.

My Committee remarked on how my research showed a high level of rigor. It was Dedoose that facilitated that rigor. I am SO GLAD that I selected Dedoose.

My quantitative class instructor had me teach them how I weighted my codes in Dedoose. They are going to start using Dedoose in the quantitative class.
