Recently I took some photos of this interesting plant in northern Peru (3500 metres above sea level, near Kuelap). Could you please help me to identify the species, genus and family? Thank you very much.
I have some doubts. Puya berteroniana is from Chile and grows in lower areas. While Puya dasylirioides is from Costa Rica. Could it be another species? Please take into account the height (3500 masl), the very humid place and location (see map).
Firstly this plant is certainly not Puya berteroniana. Secondly no doubt Puya dasylirioides is native to Costa Rica, but is not endemic to Costa Rica. Therefore, it may be found in other countries of South America. Please check the flora of Peru to trace regarding its presence in the country. In Costa Rica, Puya dasylirioides grows 2,300-3,300 meters above sea level, where the climate is cool all year. You have also categorically mentioned in the question that this interesting plant was photographed in northern Peru 3,500 meters above sea level.
