I need a method to sterilize algal growth media. I am aware of steam sterilisation but i am looking for some other methods which are cost effective and efficient. This is for large scale cultivation of algae in closed and open systems.
You can use the solar distillation plants to pre sterilize your medium if you are using in large quantity. while adding medium components do it in clean area that will enough for pond cultivation. and if you going to use it in photobioreactor means it needs better sterilization. try some conventional method. even if you set up a same steam sterilizer, based on solar electricity you can save your money. initially you will need to invest later on you will save more than enough and you can get good sterilized medium for your biomass production also..
If it is an open system it won't matter ..the strongest competitor will win...in closed systems ..my previous suggestions apply .. But you might just simply try an inoculation of your medium with your species .. If it gets a good foothold .. Small contamination may not matter .. We use ph 3 medium .. Although many species can live at this ph .. Generally only our inoculated species grows and we do not sterilize our medium at all
For large scale open cultivation, the cheapest method is chlorination/dechlorination using hypochlorite/thiosulphate. The other best alternative is to increase the inoculum volume to 10-25%, where there is no need for sterilization, and just maintaining appropriate medium conditions will suffice. In case of photobioreactor, moist sterilization/pasteurization is better as the possibility for bacterial contamination is more in closed systems.
