NS-2 or NS-3 is a tool used for simulation networks, so it's tool for scientific research and many research area can be done using them. In fact, selection of research domain depends on the theoretical background of the researchers. Below an example of papers used ns2 for simulation :

No one uses Ns-2 anymore. So it's better to work on NS-3 only

Here, I will show you how to install ns3.26 or older on Ubuntu 14.04.  First, you need to install some prerequisite packages using below commands. Make sure you are following one by one. Don't copy all at once for updating packages.

Open Terminal and Type/copy paste

1)   sudo apt-get update

2)   sudo apt-get install gcc g++ python python-dev mercurial bzr gdb valgrind gsl-bin libgsl0-dev libgsl0ldbl flex bison tcpdump sqlite sqlite3 libsqlite3-dev libxml2 libxml2-dev libgtk2.0-0 libgtk2.0-dev uncrustify doxygen graphviz imagemagick texlive texlive-latex-extra texlive-generic-extra texlive-generic-recommended texinfo dia texlive texlive-latex-extra texlive-extra-utils texlive-generic-recommended texi2html python-pygraphviz python-kiwi python-pygoocanvas libgoocanvas-dev python-pygccxml 

3)   cd  

Now to make directory type

4)  mkdir ns3 (you may use any name instead of ns3)

5)  cd ns3

6)  wget http://www.nsnam.org/release/ns-allinone-3.26.tar.bz2 // to download NS3 source code. 

7)   tar xjf ns-allinone-3.26.tar.bz2    //to extract ns3 downloaded file

8)  cd ns-allinone-3.26/ls                // this will show you what type of files the folder contains

9)   ./build.py --enable-examples --enable-tests    // you must  be in the directory of cd ns3/ns-allinone-3.26/  . it may take a long time , so take a coffee and wait .If the build is successful then it will give output like

 "Build finished successfully". (You are almost done :) )

Now run the following command to configure with waf (build tool)

10)   ./waf -d debug --enable-examples --enable-tests configure // for this

command  you must be be in the directory of cd ns3/ns-allinone-3.26/ns-3.26/

11)   ./waf

12)  ./test.py  //To test everything allright

No to run first program first.cc in ns3 , you  may go to

ns3/ns-allinone-3.26/examples/tutorial/first.cc copy it and paste it in

scratch folder  ns3/ns-allinone-3.26/scracth .Then

13)  cd ns3/ns-allinone-3.26/ns-3.26.

14)  ./waf  --run  first

If it gives output like  

Waf: Entering directory ‘/home/user/repos/ns-3-allinone/ns-3-dev/build’

Waf: Leaving directory ‘/home/userrepos/ns-3-allinone/ns-3-dev/build’

’build’ finished successfully (1.175s)

Sent 1024 bytes to 10.1.1.2

Received 1024 bytes from 10.1.1.1

Received 1024 bytes from 10.1.1.2

Then you are done with NS3. Cheers :)
