Considering the power of data analysis in MATLAB, I have always wanted to know if it was possible to control the I/O's of my operant chambers using MATLAB so that the data might be analyzed as it comes in.
Any good resources for integrating MATLAB and I/O devices would be appreciated.

We run our custom made chambers with Matlab using different I/O interfaces. A colleague uses it with chambers from National Instruments. Compatibility with Colbourne or Med-PC chambers you would have to test. The advantage is not only the convenience of having experiment and analysis in the same software but also that you have full flexibility if you want to be creative with your experimental paradigm.
Thank you Lars. This is exactly the type of thing I was looking around for. Many items in our laboratory are custom to begin with, so perhaps the conversion to National Instruments or some other I/O interface would not be out of the question.

I used MED-PC a lot for my self-administration experiments. I designed a software called Pillar Science (https://pillar.science) to automate that process. It offers graphical user interface to analyze MED-PC (or even Colbourne) data as it comes in. You can do publication-quality charts, pivot tables, advanced statistical analyses, if you work with locomotion, you can easily resize the time bins.
