In the wake of decreasing tax revenue on gas, there is an interest in road charges to fund road infrastructure and maintenance. In the US literature, the idea of charging vehicles on basis of distance travelled on the road system goes under the name Vehicle miles traveled tax. In Germany and Austria, the term MAUT is used.
However, I wonder if there is a better term used in the scholarly literature than Vehicle miles traveled tax?
I am writing on a paper relating to this type of tax, but I am not at ease with using “miles” in scientific writing.
The term "mileage tax" can be found. Also:
- Congestion pricing (but could be too far from your needs)
- VMT Tax (Vehicle miles travel tax) or VMT Fee
- Kilometre tax
@Jourquin, thanks. Presently I use VMT tax. I have seen papers using "Kilometer tax". Congestion pricing is, as you suggest, a bit wide for my needs.
In order to emphasize the possibility to charge vehicles of different weight different tariffs, the accepted term is weight-distance tax. As you may know, a committee has recently been given the instruction to look into the particulars of implementing a weight-distance tax in Sweden.
I've seen "Road Pricing" or "Road User Charging" used. Those encompass, but are a bit broader, than VMT fees/taxes. "Distance-Based User Fee" might be good ("Mileage Based User Fee" is sometimes used in the U.S.)

Many terms are used. One of them is "distance-related vehicle fee".
In some countries - e.g in Switzerland - the charge depends also on the vehicle performance. In this case the term "performance-related vehicle fee " is used
Vehicle mile fee is sometimes politically preferable to vehicle mile tax. More recently, the terms road user fee (RUC) and Mileage based road user fee (MBUF) have been used in the U.S. for light (passenger vehicles). For heavy vehicles, weight-mile tax or weight distance tax (in Oregon, for example). This is a specific type of road user fee mechanism and differs from a toll or a congestion fee (although either of those could be charged on a per mile basis.)
